What's Ragu?

RAGU/Online is the showcase for the poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and artwork of the students, graduates, and faculty of Union Institute & University's undergraduate liberal studies degree programs at Vermont College, often referred to as "The Adult Degree Program" and "New College." The word "Ragu," to everyone in our community, is the open reading/performance event during ADP residencies.
It may may not be an exaggeration to say that all of our faculty, students, and staff members have performed at or attended a Ragu at one time or another. On the residency schedule, the description for Ragu is always the same: "Ragu, from the Sanskrit raga, Italian ragu, French ragout, American rag, Jamaican raggae, Latin reges: hence a royal stew of improvisations on traditional themes, with a nice beat, at times jazzy."

Who Are We?

The Adult Degree Program began at Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont in 1964, and was acquired by Norwich University in 1981 and housed on its Vermont College campus in Montpelier, Vermont.  In 1993, Vermont College became the only college campus in the country dedicated entirely to adult learners.
Our picturesque campus has been in continuous educational use since 1834, when it was the Montpelier Seminary. In 1984, Vermont College extended its operation to Brattleboro, Vermont, and currently offers degree programs in an idyllic renovated dairy farm just outside of town. In 2001, Vermont College was acquired by The Union Institute, creating thereby a new entity, Union Institute and University. In addition to Vermont College, Union Institute & University has academic centers in Cincinnati, Miami, Sacramento, and Los Angeles.

Please visit the Union Institute & University web site at www.tui.edu and its link to Vermont College. We cordially invite you to learn more about our degree offerings (B.A., M.A., M.F.A. in Visual Art, M.F.A. in Writing, M.F.A. in Children’s Literature, M. Ed., and Ph.D), all of which are for adult learners.

2004 submissions

During the late fall of 2003, Ragu editor and ADP faculty Rhoda Carroll invited full-time and adjunct faculty throughout the Liberal Studies Division at Vermont College to propose pieces of creative work by their current and former students, and also to offer some of their own creative work. We are very pleased with the high quality of the work we received.
